RE: Dual Wheel Axles on a Fiver? Newmar?

Single over dual wheels has been an issue with semi's for years over fuel economy. It would make sense that dual wheels would have more drag going down the road than single wheels. It would have pro's and con's either way, such as greater stability, and ability to carry more weight. However, you have twice the cost when replacing tires, more drag when making turns, less fuel economy. I personally did not even consider that brand because of the duals when I purchased my Mobile Suites.

RE: exit 31 rv park, Grand Rivers, Ky

Looks good and don't forget to eat at Miss Patti's Restaurant, home of the 2" porkchops. Best thing I have ever eaten!

RE: rock guards for dually pulling 5thy wheel

I installed flaps from Dura Flap and they are designed to where all the holes align up with the factory holes. Mine came with the polished stainless steel strip at the bottom and really look good. This stops rocks from being thrown to fiver.

RE: '08 Dodge Turck Deals

I noticed to get the 44% off MSRP you must like a stripped down model with rollup windows, standard shift, with rubber floor mats, 6 cylinder gasser, no hubcaps, no sign of chrome anywhere. Think it does have a heater! It is a what the industry calls a "hook" to get you on the lot. Probably each dealership got one just to say they have one.

RE: Chevy 1500 5.3 or 6.0

I commuted with a 05 Silverado with 5.3 for two years and it would average 22 mpg just about all the time. That included some city and highway. It had a 3.42 gearing and would decrease if you went with the 3.73. It was powerful and would probably do what little towing you do. Driving 30 to 40K miles commuting is a lot of miles and could really amount to lots of gas. I do know from experience with the company trucks, the 6.0 gasser is very thisty for gas. If you can swing it, might do like others have suggested, go with the diesel, but then your fuel cost will go up even more. You might even think of getting a good used beater to drive to work and save the tow vehicle for pleasure.

RE: Best MPG?

In my opinion, you should go with a Dodge with Cummins. I realize they don't look as good as the Chevy, but in the long run you will be better off and will last longer also.

RE: How many new snowbirds this winter?

I retired August 1st and plan on snowbirding in Ft Myers, Florida this year for 5 months starting November. This will be our first time wintering in the south!

RE: HOW HARD IS IT TO TOW A 40ft 5TH WHEEL?

I pull a 40 footer and have no problems at all. On the road you cannot tell difference between a 30 footer or a 40 footer, it all travels forward. Just have to watch your turns and make sure campgrounds can accomodate you. Problem I have is some of the campgrounds were built for small campers with no slides and when you have large slides on both sides, sometimes a 18 foot wide site gets close. I went with the longer fiver strictly for the extra room.

RE: Branson for Thanksgiving

I second the Compton's Ridge Campground. My favorite site is 105 a premier site. I would think the indoor pool is open. Might just call them or look at their website.

RE: They want to Buy my campsite!?!?

If the money's right, I can always camp later! Some people have more money than sense and I would be glad to take it from them.

RE: hitch locks

I made mine out of a pipe coupling and padlock. When camping you have all the slides out and would take some doing to unlock everything, pull in slides and hook up to a truck. I doubt if any are stolen while camping. The easiest would be a storage lot.

RE: We've Been Robbed!

I have another question, what happened to the $20,000 dollars the lady paid out? Is she just out that much money with no means of recovery? This would make you think twice about leaving your rv in a storage lot. Really sorry for your personal things that cannot be replaced.

RE: Class A pusher to fifth wheel.

I went from a Class A Winnebago Adventurer 35 fter to a 40 foot fifth wheel. I chose a Mobile Suites along with a Ford F350 Dually with Tow Boss package so it could handle the 18,000 load. My decision to switch to a fiver was the upkeep cost and we didn't travel that much meant that it was foolish to continue to keep up another drivetrain, extra insurance. We snowbird for 5 months at a time and only needed a fiver for our use. It has so much room and is loaded to the gills with accessories and toys. You get lot more accessories than a motorhome would have for a lot less money, like 42" LCD TV's, fireplaces, hydraulic levelers, generator, etc. Best decision I have ever made.

RE: New RV Anti-freeze

Same old product that we have been using. Just a new label and marketing technique. By the way, my strainer bulb on by ShuFlo water pump froze & broke last winter with 100% propylene glycol and had to be replaced. Guess it does freeze to a point. They have been using propylene glycol in childrens medicine for long time to prevent medicine from separating.

RE: tail gate theft

My 07 Ford F350 did not come with a locking tailgate. It must be an option!

RE: Proper way to plan a trip

If I am not familiar with certain routes, I just go to the "roads and routes" on this forum and ask fellow RVer's which roads are the best for my 40 ft fiver. This has worked for me, especially when I am not utilizing the interstate highways. I look at mapquest and satelite pictures of the roads if I am in doubt. Fuel stops can be a problem if not running interstates due to the layout of the stations. For some reason they seem to make them for cars so they can look at them fuel and concerned about drive-offs. My Garmin GPS if very handy in letting me know where fuel stops and food are located when travelling. My 60 gallon auxiliary fuel tank has helped me eliminating the worry of filling up while in transit.

RE: Got my PDI checklist, Got the 5ver hookup - unhook check

Make sure your trailer wheels are chocked while hooking up and unhooking. This keeps the fiver from rolling and it makes the hitch latch better also, then try to pull forward slightly to see if hitch is latched good. Then unchock the wheels. Works for me!

RE: Memory Foam Topper

We purchased a king size 2" memory foam pad from WalMart and you have to constantly reposition it. It has also shrunk about 4 inches in diameter length and width, and will only be a queen size before long. I would like to have the one's that everyone has that don't move or shrink. It does make a very soft bed which makes my back hurt if I sleep to long. It would make more sense to just get a good mattress to start with and you will not have to put up with the add on's.

RE: Neat Chevrolet Commercial

I found it odd that on F350 and up models the manufacturers don't even put the mpg on the sticker. So I guess it really don't matter to the one's that are purchasing them.

RE: Ford F-350 vs F-450

I pull a fiver that grosses at 18,000# with a 07 F350 Dually Tow Boss 4.30 gearing, that has a GCW of 26,000# and have no issues at all. It also rides great and I considered the F450 but glad I didn't go that route. I had straight axles on my Ford Class A Motothome and the ride was just awful and would never consider anything with as straight axle.
